No, a person does not have to be suicidal to be bipolar. Also there are many different types of bipolar. Type 1s generally is what most people think of when the hear the word bipolar…it has the manic highs and depressed lows. Type 2s are the more docile of the types…more low lows and low to medium highs. Generally speaking people with type 2 bipolar are often misdiagnosed as having depression or even cyclothymic disorder. Ask you doctor to screen you for Type 2 Bipolar and check out www.nami.org.

    Not at all.
If you’re worried that you might be bipolar, talk to a mental health professional. My understanding is that it is very treatable. You don’t have to live on a rollercoaster.

Hi! Answer to first part…. NO! – but a person can become suicidal as the result of having BP. Manic Depression is just another (older) name for BP.

People don’t have to be suicidal to be bipolar but they have to have both sides of the emotional scale. so when depressed they may be suicidal.

Bi-Polar mental illness is a mood disorder. In general It flucatuates between highs and lows but every case is different. Some bi-polars can have sustained episodes in one mood. Some fluctuate more frequently. To learn more about this very treatable disease try this website.

    Nope. Nope.
I am wondering if you have been tested for hyperinsulinemia however. I understand that having that condition can lead to many other internal chemical imbalances.
For basic information on hyperinsulinemia, you may want to check out http://www.hufa.org.

No, manic depression, means a deep, uncontrolled depression. Suicidal may be the only way out that they can think of, but they don’t have to be suicidal. Bipolar means they’ll go from a euphoric state and bounce to a depressive state. Up and down (bipolar). If someone depressed, lead them to religion, because suicide will not allow them enter heaven, and if they believe it, they might not be suicidal.

  9. Mickey S says:

no yhey dont but is common for bipolar people to become suicidal and alot of them do commit suicide. if i was you i would do some research on it and make a doctors appointment.

  10. rcross12 says:

go check out the diagnostic statistic manual from your library, it will tell you all about being manic depressive and having bipolar disorder. suicide is more linked with a deep depression, manic/bipolar is very different.

well bipolar and manic are the same things and i suffer from them, and i was suicidal a few times but i dont think it makes you bipolar mine was brought up when i had my kids, the hormones made it show up, now i take a great combo of meds and have an excellent mental health doctor

  12. SUNSHINE says:

Nope. My ex was bipolar and he was never suicidal. If anything, he just liked to live and make everyone else’s life miserable. Bipolar and manic depressive are the same mental illness by the way.

  13. WiserAng says:

Absolutely not. Check out Wikipedia’s page on Bipolar. Suicidal thoughts can be present but they are NOT a prerequisite. Bipolar is an uncontrolled scale of highs and lows that you really won’t have much control over. There are check lists online that you can check out and see if they fit you. Then, talk to your Dr. Another possibility is Asperger’s Syndrome. Check it out too. It is a common misdiagnosis with Bipolar.

First of all bipolar disorder is not called manic deppression anymore, and only during the bouts of deppression does one feel suicidal, but even in deppression people aren’t always suicidal I think 1 in 4 people with deppression are sucidial. Plus remember Bipolar disorder is not just one disorder there are 3 levels of different severity.

  15. Jason says:

    no.
    depression can cause suicidal.
but bipolar or manic depression, during the depression stage, the patient can be suicidal.
the different between bipolar and depression is that bipolar patient will experience the up stage whereby they will feel very high (the manic) and the down stage (the depression). patient suffers from depression will only suffer from the down.
