I didnt think there was any actual cure for this apart from careful monitering from your GP and trying different meds until you find the correct drug/dose to suit. I sympathise as my husband suffers this horrible illness. Try as much as you can to talk to family or friends when you are feeling very low or very manic – it can help and they will support you more if they understand.

unfortunately there is no cure as yet, but if you are on medication for this condition it’s vital that you continue with your medication even if you feel you don’t need it any more which is very common. I wish you all the best with this and feel sure you will cope admirably

Learn what works for you. Isolate your triggers and learn to control your emotional reactions to stressful situations. Self management is the cure you’re looking for!! I’ve been nursing for 8 years and seen this work. Good luck xxx

there is no cure…treatment consists of managing symptoms with the proper medication

  4. Diana S says:

No there’s no cure for it as far as I know only pills that can suppress it,

not any real cure, but medication and good counseling can do wonders. You can act normal again.
What you cannot do is self-medicate, especially with alcohol. I think for most it is a life long battle, it doesn’t seem worth it on bad days; on good days you can’t imagine how close you came to ending it.
It’s at least worth a try with the meds and doctor. The alternative is always there, I call it Plan B.

I am Bipolar and I am really sorry to let you know that there is no ultimate cure for this disease just medication therapy. After dealing with it for the last fifteen years or so I have come to the conclusion that the first thing that you do in the morning is take your meds that you have to. If you don’t take them you may find yourself back in the hospital again. Remember meds are what will keep your brain right so don’t forget to take them. The reason I am pressing this in your noodle is because once most people start feeling better on the medications they have a tendency to stop taking them. You can’t do that or you will get sick again. So good luck and I hope that I helped you. Thanks

Considering a good portion of people who have been diagnosed with bipolar have been diagnosed wrong, I would say yes.
You have to have a very educated doctor who is very willing to see ALL of your symptoms and their causes. There are some who can just give you a label, give you meds and tell you that you will never be cured. In my case, that is not the truth. I had this diagnosis for 20 years and have been told recently that it was wrong. I am getting off my last medicine (Lithium) And still in therapy. I was told I had a chemical imbalance. What I wasn’t told was that it most likely was caused by my experimenting with alcohol and drugs before I was diagnosed.
I stay in therapy and continue to make the behavioral changes as well as changing my thought patterns.
You can change you life with the right doctor and there are some people who truly have this madding disease and can have a normal life. Like diabetes, true bipolar can not be cured, however it is very manageable and a normal life can be led. I have never felt this happy and healthy since I was 16.

No sozzy. i watched a documentary that says it can’t be cured but it can be helped with tablets.

  12. Psycho_M says:

not sure that there is but medication helps combat the effects

I’m not sure about a cure, but a good treatment is Lithium. A friend of mine had bi polar/manic depression, and she found this useful. She also went on an in-patient course on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at the Florence Nightingale Hospital (Private Mental Hospital) in Lisson Grove, London, NW1. I also had treatment for clinical depression under the same course, and have found this invaluable in managing this condition long term, along side treatment with anti-depressants.
I hope this is of help.

No cure…but it can be successfully managed with a combination of good psychiatrist, medication and psychotherapy.

There is no cure…you just need to stay on the medication given and talk to your social worker or psychiatrist if you feel things are not quite right.I do hope you get the correct medication that will work for you and make your day to day life alot more pleasant.

If in fact you know you have this condition you need to consult a private physician or someone in the medical profession to give you the proper guidance of your health. BB

I am manic depressive/bi polar and was diagnosed back in 82. I have been taking the same meds. for years that work for me, which is the most important thing. You need to keep taking the meds but if you have a problem of any kind let the doctor know. No one knows I have this problem unless I tell them. I enjoy life, have a great guy who supports me, and of course, a great doctor too. I use to go talk to a therapist but not anymore, but if you feel you need a therapist, by all means talk to someone on a professional level. Of course, friends and family support is important as well. There also may be a group in your area that has meetings and speakers as well…perhaps your doctor or therapist may know of a group like that. I think you have to understand that, because of news media, etc., alot of people may judge you and you have to be strong. I have a great job for an automotive company, I don’t think they even know I am manic depressive. They don’t have to, it doesn’t make me who I’ve become today after all these years. Sure, I had my bad down times as well. I was married to someone who brought me down. If there are people like that who can’t support or understand what you are dealing with, find those who can. The best of luck to you.

Hi, as someone with bipolar I can trll you that there is no known cure, however, it can be controlled and it is possible to be sympton free during periods of stability, though of course, going up and down can be part and parcel of the illness even when fairly stable. Medication is cruicial though some folks manage unmedicated, try to exercise as this will help greatly and try as much as you can to eat well but most of all keep taking prescribed meds.

  19. kaleidos says:

Brilliant answer Stephen F, I just hope that cacoon of ignorance your living in never gets broken.

My brother has had hyper bi-polar for about 10 years now, and we find that he is much better having the regular injections os slow release medication, rather than taking it in tablet form (despite the side effects). This is because, when he is in a manic state, he does not feel that he need the medication, and therefore, stops taking it, which sends him spiralling back down again.
There is no cure, but you need to find the treatment that best works for you.

Mental health disorders are recently going for a rough ride, a lot of previous illnesses lumped in together or split apart. It’s not really a disease, so you can’t cure it- it’s all in your head
