Posted by: Alan in Manic Depression, tags: Causes, Depression, Major, Recurring, What
I have been having depressive episodes between about every few weeks and every few months for five years, but i don’t think I have ever been manic or hypomanic. Is there a disorder where you get have recurring major depression but is not bipolar disorder? And what would cause something like this?

It’s called recurrent depression. It can be a number of causes. Past experience that causes you to be insecure, stress, trauma, constant anxiety about one particular thing, etc. Early treatment is needed, and you need to be strong for a while. Going to therapy is a big help, and you will be surprised at the results, if you are willing to heal.
Best of luck.

I attended a Depression Recovery Seminar by Dr. Neil Nedley, and he said that in his research he discovered more than 100 potential causes of depression. Some of them are medical, some genetic, some are related to upbringing and traumatic events, and some are related to lifestyle choices.
Dr. Nedley categorized the causes of depression into 10 “hit” categories. If you have “hits” in 4 or more of the categories, you are likely to be depressed. And the more hits you have, the more depressed you will be.
While we can’t control our genetics, there are some lifestyle issues we can control. Dr. Nedley has a good book on depression, Depression the Way Out. He also has an online test you can take that helps identify which factors may be contributing to your depression. Learning the cause of your depression is an important step towards dealing with it.

Depression is being researched as shorted circuits in the neuro pathways of the brain, and an imbalance of the necessary chemicals which make the jump across these networks one especially concerned with is serotonin. Psychiatrists can prescribe a medication for you after an examination, and in some states a licensed psychologist may do this also. You ought to see the community doc first and get a check up for any physiological problems.

It sounds like clinical (major) depression.
My father was bi-polar and I have clinical depression, not mania.
Imbalance of brain chemicals are the cause of these two disorders.
A good therapist will put you on medication so you can live a better life.
Trust me. I know.
