Are episodes of mania and depression often triggered by events? If so, are you immediately manic or depressed after the event or does it creep up closely (say over a period of a few days)?
On that same line, if you have an episode of mania and then suddenly something REALLY bad happens – would you stay manic? Or could you swing to a depressed mood?

It really all depends on the person. It sounds like you might be describing what is often called rapid cycling. I am bipolar, and I can usually feel a manic episode coming on over a period of days. The crash into depression usually comes more suddenly than the mania, but now I am on a mood stabilizer and it really helps. For more info on bipolar check out the links below.

My aunt is VERY manic. These things are not usually triggered, though traumatic events may do this, she usually goes in cycles.
I’d have to say, that if you feel depressed for two weeks, then crazy as **** happy for a couple, you have a bipolar problem. Otherwise, it’s probably just a regular depression problem that you can’t deal with.
Peace, and I hope you feel better, the world’s ****** up but don’t shove medicine down your throat. My aunt’s facing liver trouble due to Lithium. Try to fix your diet or friends!
    Peace,
