What To Do About School Loans Since I Was Diagnosed As Having Manic Depression & Have Trouble Keeping Work?
Posted by: Alan in Manic Depression, tags: About, Depression, Diagnosed, Have, Having, Loans, Manic, School, Since, What
Just got out of school. I was diagnosed during my schooling as having manic depression. I don’t have a job and no matter how hard I try cannot seem to hold a job down for more than 4-5 months. Doc says I am high-high functioning whatever that means. I could be wrong, but I believe that disqualifies me from recieving disability. I now have over $16,000 in loans and the future looks dim. Like I could be homeless someday soon. Please help with any advice you may have. I’d be happy to talk to you too if you’d let me. Thanks.

I think it will be difficult for you to obtain benefits because (a) you graduated from college and (b) your doctor feels that you are high-functioning.
So here is what you can do:
1) Check you meds. They may not be the best combination to help you function.
2) Find a low-stress job, with flexible hours. It may not be your dream job, but you will be able to keep it and make money.
3) Get into therapy so that you can learn alternative methods for coping.
If you made it through college, you can make it through a job.
Just make sure you choose one that is low-stress and flexible.

Bipolar disorder or manic depression as it was called several years ago is a very tough mental disorder but not one that cannot be controlled. Ask your doc to help you get on SSI which you are entitled to. This does not mean that you shouldn’t go out and try to work but SSI will certainly help during the hard time. The doctor can balance your medication to take care of the mood swings, especially the high highs. I won’t prescribe medication but I can tell you that there are several combinations out there that work if you keep on the routine. Most people drop the program when they begin to feel better. Wrong! You may never be able to guit the program. For the time being forget about the loans. Explain that your have a serious mental condition and you require time to get work and begin paying back the loans. You have no alternative. They must understand that you mean well because if they don’t understand they will never get paid back. you may need letters from your doctor to prove that you are presently out of work and are not well but that there is hope for the future. Don’t give up. There is an end to your tunnel. Keep trying and ask for your doctor’s help. If not your doctor then some kind of aid society. Good luck.

I also have manic depression. I also have 15,000 in student loans. The difference is I am on disability. I was approved very fast. Disability is becoming harder and harder to get on, especially if your doctor is claiming you a highly functioning. Social Security will want to see a hospitalization for your mental health. I would be happy to talk to you in more more depth on how to get approved and the advantages and disadvantages of being disabled. Feel free to contact me through e mail

Have you applied for your disability? I am drawing my disability and I got mine because I am grossly or morbidly obese (extremely fat) on top of that I was diagnosed with depression….but I am(I think) pretty high functioning and I still am receiving my monthly disability check….so I think it may depend on your overall health,,,you may have a perfectly functioning brain but are unable to walk does that mean you shouldn’t get disability. You never know until you try and don’t give up if they deny you the first time…keep trying.
Good luck.

Find a job that you love and you will never work another day the rest of your life!
Ive found that you can never beat the alarm clock blues, and youve just gotta dig deep and get up and to work, but once im here i love it.
keep positive and focus on goals, dont worry about the bad stuff. worrying doesnt usually help much : )
also you would be very surprised how much a good diet and exercise can help your mental health. feeling good about yourself is just another way to feel good : )
i also like to volunteer as well. often helping others is a great way to feel good too. i like planting trees because you can get out there in the sun and do something for the environment too.
just keep smiling and moving foward, harness the feelings from the good things in your life and block out the feelings from the bad things.

A lawyer told me once that you can get them dismissed do to hardship (such as a disability) — this was based largely on my being depressed (no diagnosed) at the time. I didn’ t do it, but instead went back to school for a degree I could use. Anyway, if possible depression was enough, being bi-polar and guaranteed to be both manic and depressed in the future should certainly qualify.
I understand what you’re talking about, though — the main thing that got me depressed to begin with is that I owed a lot more than that and found my degree to be useless in the real world. I was taking home 15K a year, owing more than I made, going hungry often, with no apparent hope for the future. So I know what that part is like.

You can certainly talk to me. After 9 at night and all through the weekend you can call me at 810-341-4284 that is if you are in America. Otherwise email me at msspelled@hotmail.com.
What kind of doc did you see. A psychiatrist, or medical doctor? You need to contact those to whom you owe money to why they aren’t getting their payments. A snail-mail letter, followed by a phone call is good.
You may want to apply for ssi. They will use their own psychiatrists, but if you are turned down once, apply again. That’s really the best I have for you. Good Luck
Blessed Be
