Why ask why?
He had problems, went for help, was diagnosed...
What he needs now is the support and caring comments from a friend who can help him learn to determine when he is moving out of the "normal" zone.
Yeah, one manic episode CAN easily help the docs FINALLY correctly diagnose a bipolar. See, alot of bipolars (like me) mainly operated in the depressed portion of the spectrum with minor forays toward hypomania... It can create a very difficult situation. The drugs for depression CAN cause an undiagnosed bipolar to SHOOT into a MAJOR horrific manic episode (like me)... Paxil was the depression drug that sent me on a nasty "vacation" to hell... Lets just say, I was so MANIC by the time I admitted myself into the funny farm that they were able to diagnose me as Bipolar very easily (I think it took a 3 minute interview with me)...
So yes, it can happen. Be a true friend and help him find his plumb line again... It took me YEARS to find my center again after that my taste of hell...
Hopefully your friends Manic episode wasn't full blown... Mine was all out classic sterotypical MANIC and its like it opened a pandoras box... I went to a level that I had never been before but now that the door has been opened once, now I find myself having to FIGHT the triggers and stress to keep from returning to that hell.

I agree with Save the Pits. I am bi-polar, and I always thought manic meant the "high" happy, let's-go-shopping kind of attitude I saw in the movies. But (for me) it's more what Pits says - a very agitated emotional state, and in a mixed state (what I have) it's mixed with depression at the same time.
But it is treatable, and your friend can lead a very happy, healthy life. Kudos to you for staying his friend, and not allowing the stigma of "mental illness" color your relationship.

I do sometimes, actually.....
I thought it was just me.
I just like the way it feels. And so do other people. They say I'm happy.

It's very tricky to diagnose mental health problems and the symptoms are very vague so yes, your friend could be diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder with only one Manic episode. Also, mania presents in a few different ways. What you are describing sounds like classic mania but I have bipolar disorder myself and my manias are feeling "normal" but very very irritable. Bipolar disorder can present in many different ways so it is possible your friend has had "mixed" episodes or slight manic episodes in the past that you haven't realized.
Kudos to you for sticking by your friend :-)

Yes. Having a manic episode is what differentiates Bipolar Disorder from (unipolar) depression.
There is even a classification for Bipolar Disorder, Single Manic Episode. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manic_episo…

Sounds like an interesting idea; my version is to wait until I am near sleep, then hop up and be creative.

I don't try to have psychotic breaks....but I miss having a lot of energy. Yes, like you, I'm way more creative and able to do things during mania.
I can't even take care of my house right now. I'm at a very low energy stage for about 2 years now.

My aunt is VERY manic. These things are not usually triggered, though traumatic events may do this, she usually goes in cycles.
I'd have to say, that if you feel depressed for two weeks, then crazy as **** happy for a couple, you have a bipolar problem. Otherwise, it's probably just a regular depression problem that you can't deal with.
Peace, and I hope you feel better, the world's ****** up but don't shove medicine down your throat. My aunt's facing liver trouble due to Lithium. Try to fix your diet or friends!
Peace,

That's actually a pretty classic thing for a Bipolar to do. I know I am addicted to mania. Well hypomania anyway. Full on mania sucks. Thing is if I go off my meds I MIGHT become hypomanic but I also might become full on manic and I might become seriously depressed. AND I have to go through withdrawls from the meds before I even have a hint of which way I'm going to go. Still I do think about it a lot. Us and Schizophrenics are the worst when it comes to med compliance.........
