Determining the Different Types of Depression

Depression is a state of mind, which affects you on the whole. Usually, when your hormones start to fall off balance, your depression will shoot up. All those people who are going through the stage of puberty or a change in life will see that depression may creep in when they experience a change in their hormones. Apart from that, if you take too much drugs, they will have a negative affect on you and eventually you will be a target of depression due to the drug abuse.

A lot of research has been done in the area of depression and it is now a known fact that there are 2 major types of depression. The first type of depression is known as the major depressive disorder. This is when a person goes through five or more periods of depression within 2 weeks of time. Although they won’t be feeling the depression all the time, it will always be reoccurring every second day. The worse part is, it continues on for the rest of the life. However, such frequent instances can be stopped with the help of right medical assistance. Through the use of therapy and medication, it would be easy for you to control your depression and feel much better. Even though it won’t completely go away, you will have a better control over it.

The second type of depression is known as dysthymia. This is when a person goes through mild symptoms, which are less serious. The most common problem that comes up in this form of depression is trouble with sleeping and eating. You either will not get enough or you will end up eating more than you need and getting too much sleep. Apart from this, you might start to feel tired for no specific reason and still have this strong urge to get out of the bed.

A person suffering from this type of depression will see that it isn’t very serious and can be overcome with the help of therapist. The only way to differentiate a person with a serious depression problem from someone who suffers from dysthymia is, dysthymia will not affect a person daily life. They will continue to do things the way they used to, but will often complain that life doesn’t have much to offer. Yet, they aren’t hopeless about life and deep down know that it isn’t meaningless.

Depression isn’t limited by race, you will see that people from all social groups, races and personalities all experience depressive states. It also doesn’t affect people from a certain age group either, as this disorder can enter a person’s life at any age. There are some cases where children got bogged down because of depression and eventually caused them to commit suicide. However, the majority of people affected with depression come in the 25 – 44 age bracket. So the rule of thumb is, no matter what type of depression you have or what age you experience it, it shouldn’t be ignored and needs to be treated as soon as possible.
