He works 60 plus hours a week and has a 2 1/2 year old daugheter who he gets to see on Sundays. He just moved into his own apartment and is under a lot of stress which I see effects his depression. What can I do to help? Anyone here bipolar or manic depressive that can give me some insight as what I can do as a friend?

the first thing u need to do, and it seems u r already doing it is provide support for them. secondly, it is one of the most common types of mental disorders, and doctors now understand it much better than in recent years. it is a bipolar disorder, and has to do with the seratonin and dopamine receptors in the brain. the dopamine receptors/ seratonin recptors produce a chemical imbalance in the brain, and one receptor, either A or B is taking in too much of one chemical. this produces the manic and depressive phases that u see. the best thing for ur friend is to go see a medical professional and get a mental evaluation done. after that, therapy, counseling, or medication can be prescribed. again, continue to give ur friend lots of moral support, as this is a very difficult thing to deal with. i hope i helped.

I have since childhood. I finally went on meds 13 years ago which have helped, but because my nervousness is so severe, I still have a hard time working full time or going to social things like church. I was just switched to Cymbalta a week ago and am having nightmares like crazy. I want to order some tapes on cognitive therapy when I get my first full pay check from my new (anxiety ridden) job.
