It is a serious illness that can lead to unwanted thoughts and could cause your wife harm. She needs to be evaluated by a psychiatrist and then be referred to a psychologist as soon a s possible. There is a lot of information about post-partem depression on the internet. My suggestion would be to check it out at webmd.com,and see if the symptoms that are listed there are what you are seeing in your wife’s behavior.
