What is the best way to tell my family I spent a year in a psych ward?

I have manic depression and spent a stretch in psych ward to avoid charges for stabbing a cop. I have been recieving treatment for 3 years and am fine. My Mum just moved to Canada, from Britain and I am sure one of my kids or friends will let it slip. How do I tell her. Or should I bother.
