Teen Depression: Preventing Depression in Teens
Depression occurring in teenage is a serious issue. Studies show that 4 in every 10 teenagers suffer from serious depression, and require professional assistance to overcome it.
Although sadness is a normal, healthy feeling, prolonged sadness with no recovery usually leads to stress and depression. If your teen is going through a phase of depression, you will notice that it is mainly because of problems within the family, relationship with friends, schoolwork, peer pressure etc. What’s more worse is, it might lead them to indulge in harmful actions such as unprotected sex and drug abuse.
It’s a known fact that depression in teens is a treatable condition, which can be taken care of with the use of proper resources. However, still most of the teen depression cases in the U.S. go untreated. This is not a good sign, because if depression is left untreated, it will start getting worse, go on for much longer and be difficult to reverse when and if the treatment does start.
The two known and most common types of teen depression are reactive depression and manic depression, which is also called bipolar disorder. Among the two, reactive depression is found to occur in a lot more in teens, where the child goes through prolonged sadness phases and has a feeling of being worthless. On the other hand, bipolar disorder is linked to disturbing mood swings, which range from being extremely sad to highly manic in short amounts of time.
There a few symptoms that you need to look out for when you’re evaluating teen depression. A very critical and obvious sign is when your teen is going through a lot of sadness and isn’t feeling any kind of relief even after crying and letting it out.
Also, if they have a low self-esteem, and show feelings of guilt for no real reason, it’s another strong sign that they are going through a state of depression. Other things, which form an indication, are having a negative view about life, frequent indecision, high level of irritability, no definite sleep pattern and many such signs.
The first step that needs to be taken by a teenager when going through a depressive state is talk to a friend, relative or teacher who they can trust to help them. They can also discuss their problems with trusted sources such as parents, their family doctor or a professional psychologist.
Teen depression is usually treated with medication and/or psychotherapy. Typical psychotherapy sessions for teen depression include detailed talk about what and how they feel about opening up to a trained psychotherapist, so that the root cause of the problem can be reached, that led to the depression in the first place. Mostly, depression is caused due to misunderstanding reality, and seeing it in negative light. This can definitely be treated under the guidance of a good professional.
In much more severe cases of teen depression, medicines are also prescribed to correct the problem. Medication might be needed first before any kind of progress is made, which again depends on the level of depression.
From the points mentioned above, we can conclude that in order to have your teen to lead a better life, it’s important to identify signs of depression early and treat them at a nascent stage.
